Jo with Sacred Space painting

In 2006 Jo Douglas îcame homeî to Northern New Mexico after 30 years in a corporate environment in Houston, Texas. Her entire life had been moving toward this time and place.  Self discovery through creativity was her goal.  She enthusiastically began trying many different forms of art.   She attended an intuitive painting workshop and there began the development of Jo Douglas as an artist.  Intuitive or process painting, which merges art, emotion and spirituality, allowed Jo the freedom to be spontaneous and release all the creativity that she had bottled up inside.  Her paintings powerfully express these emotions with bright color, bold lines, and texture.

Before moving to New Mexico Jo had been attracted to beads and making jewelry.  She had been collecting beads for many years in preparation for her artist's life.  After taking a metal clay class she discovered another jewelry medium in addition to the beading she already knew she loved.  Jo plays and explores while creating each piece of jewelry.  This makes each piece unique, created in the same manner as the intuitive painting but with silver, copper, and beads instead of paint and canvas.

Jo had spent her entire life working with fibers and fiber arts, having gotten a BS in Home Economics with a specialization in clothing construction.  Her creative outlet while working was sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, and cross stitch.  After moving to New Mexico she joined a knitting group and began knitting in earnest after a break of many years.  Creating shawls, scarves and knitted purses in the colors of New Mexico are her specialties.

Jo's stone carving is her meditation.  While hand carving and polishing each piece her love for the land and nature flow through her and into the sculpture.

Jo's love of the beauty surrounding her in New Mexico has allowed her to express herself in ways she never thought possible through art.  Each day holds new possibilities and new triggers for more forms of art.  Stay tuned; who knows what will happen next!
